Technique

Be patient and move slowly. If you quickly put the match to the bottom of the kindling pile, it’s almost like blowing it out. You are moving the match through the air so fast that the air puts the flame out. Hold the matchstick horizontally, with the tip just slightly downward. Don’t be afraid of burning your fingers. If you have chosen your kindling well and built your pile up as described, you will have enough time for your kindling to catch fire before your fingers feel the heat.
